Student visas
The maximum number of work hours permitted during study terms and semesters will be 48 hours per fortnight beginning on July 1, 2023.
Please get in touch with the Department of Home Affairs and let them know what actions you have taken to gather the information thus far if you are unable to finish any of these before the deadline. You should use your ImmiAccount to attach proof of this, such as a payment receipt or booking confirmation.
There is no time limit on when you can apply for a student visa. You should submit a comprehensive application at least six weeks before the start of your course.
You might apply for a different visa category that is more suited to your objectives.
A visa cancellation decision may affect your future choices for Australian immigration, thus this should happen as quickly as feasible. The Department of Home Affairs website offers students the opportunity to research their visa alternatives.
You need to sign up for a course at the same AQF right away.
Students must continue to enroll in a course at the same Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level or above for which they were granted the visa in order to fulfill Condition 8202. Students pursuing a doctoral degree (AQF10) or transferring to a master’s degree (AQF9) are exempt from this requirement.
Before changing your degree, you must apply for and be granted a new student visa if you want to switch to a lower level or non-award programme. Here is where you may find out more details about altering your course.
You have to leave Australia.
Many nations are opening their borders, especially to citizens who are returning, and commercial flights out of Australia’s major airports are now available.
Find out whether there are any private or official repatriation flights to your nation of origin as well. Please get in touch with your country’s embassy or consulate in Australia if you need any additional help to travel back home.
Education providers can enroll students in online courses and issue fresh Confirmations of Enrolment (CoE). Your education provider will send your new CoE to the Department of Home Affairs if you have a current student visa.
You can submit your new CoE through ImmiAccount if you have an open student visa application.
Graduate (post-study work) visa for a brief period
To assist students who have been touched by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian government has put in place a variety of initiatives, including:
Due to COVID-19, holders of student visas who are studying online outside of Australia may use their coursework to satisfy the Australian study requirement for a post-study employment visa.
If graduates on student visas are unable to return to Australia owing to COVID-19, they may be eligible to apply for a post-study work visa from abroad.
Where COVID-19 has interfered with access to these services, applicants will be provided further time to deliver English language test results and biometric checks.
Graduating Temporarily – Graduate Work Stream
Candidates for the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa Graduate Work stream will not be required to select an occupation from the list of skilled occupations or obtain a skills assessment between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023.
All applications submitted on or after July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023, must comply with this. Since this is a time-of-application restriction, it will not be applied to applications submitted before 1 July 2022.
Stream for Temporary Graduate Visa Replacement
Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa holders will have their visas extended to 30 September 2022 starting on 18 February 2022 if they qualify for a replacement Temporary Graduate visa due to lost time in Australia as a result of COVID-19 overseas travel limitations.
This temporary remedy permits qualified Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa holders who were impacted by COVID-19 travel limitations to enter or remain in Australia to live and work until they are eligible to apply for a replacement Temporary Graduate visa starting on July 1, 2022.
Current and past holders of Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visas who missed time in Australia because of COVID-19 overseas travel limitations can submit an application for a replacement visa through a new Replacement stream beginning on July 1, 2022.
This includes everyone who had a Temporary Graduate visa and was outside of Australia at any time between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021.
Applications can be submitted for the Replacement stream until December 31, 2026.
More information on the prerequisites for applying to the Replacement stream can be found on the department’s website.
The Department of Home Affairs will directly inform visa holders of their extension. Visit the Department of Home Affairs website for further details.
For graduates of master’s programs in coursework, the temporary graduate visa’s period of validity has been extended from two to three years, matching that of graduates of master’s programs in research.
Graduates from the vocational education and training (VET) sector will also be granted a Temporary Graduate Visa for a period of two years, up from one year.
The new visa settings would also broaden currently in place protections for students and temporary graduates, allowing time spent studying online while abroad to be taken into account when determining eligibility for a temporary graduate visa.
To be eligible for the Australian Study Requirement (ASR), you must have satisfactorily completed all course requirements over the duration of at least two academic years (92 weeks) of study.
Online study completed outside of the country will, starting on the day the visa is granted, count toward eligibility for the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa within the COVID concession period.
